Baby Sleep Safety

In the 80s and 90s of the last century, scientists of the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) actively researched the organization of proper sleep of children under 3 years. They paid special attention to the causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the first year of life.

The scientists have singled out a number of important factors that can increase the risk of SIDS and have prepared a set of recommendations for creating a proper safe sleeping place.

What can threaten the health and life of a baby

Sleeping on the stomach or on a soft surface can make it difficult for the baby to breathe. At some point, it may simply not have enough strength to take another breath. From the position on the side, it is too easy for the child to return to the stomach, so this position is also not recommended.
Too high air temperature during sleep or too warm clothes can also harm the baby.
An unfastened blanket increases the chance of blocking air access to the baby’s airways, so it is best not to use it until the baby gets older.
Sleeping in the same bed with parents, sisters, brothers or pets is a frequent cause of baby trauma and a factor that provokes SIDS.

What should be done to organize a sleeping place

  • Put the baby to sleep on its back
  • Choose a mattress with high rigidity
  • Do not use pillows
  • Do not put soft toys in the crib

  • Fix the blanket, and even better, replace it with baby’s sleeping bags.Do not overheat the child during sleep. Do not place the crib next to heating devices
  • Sleep with the child in the same room, but in a separate bed
